THE ARTIST

CHRIS WOODS was born in 1932 in Winchester, Hampshire. Educated in Winchester much of his working life has been spent in printing and publishing and it was not until 1984 that he began painting full-time.  Self-taught, he decided to specialise in railway locomotives, thereby enabling him to resume on canvas his boyhood flirtation with steam railway.

He enjoys creating a sense of nostalgia which is reflected in all his paintings. He has achieved considerable success and is recognised as a fine painter of railway, aviation and marine subjects and his work hangs in museums, airports and private collections at home and abroad. Chris has had a number of successful exhibitions in London and the South and much of his work has been reproduced both as open and limited edition prints and also greeting cards and puzzles. He has been featured numerous times in “Steam Railway” and “Railway Magazine” and also on B.B.C. Radio Solent. One time wrote and illustrated a column in the monthly “Railway Express” newspaper.

In 1992 he was invited to write a book, to include coloured plates of his work. This he entitled “A Romance with Steam” and was published in 1993 (unfortunately now out of print). Soon after Chris became the subject of a video film which was produced on behalf of “Railway Magazine”.
